What is hacking, as in the horse show? I can only give you my experience from Australian showing ; -) Hacks are a class of horses at a show here. So we have a Pony class, Galloway class and Hack class. These are all based on height. Ponies are not exceeding 1. Galloways are 1. 4hh and not exceeding 1. Hacks are anything 1. You will always see beautiful, tall, elegant horses in the hacking class, as the big horses will nearly always have much nicer movement beside a smaller hack. That being said it is possible for smaller horses in any class to beat the bigger ones.
Our Shetland won the "best child's mount pony not exceeding 1. As a general rule of thumb the judge will stand in the middle of the ring and all of the horses will trot and then canter a large circle around the judge. Then all the horses line up and the judge asks each rider to do a specific "work out". If the class has heaps of horses in it, they will watch everyone in the circle and then call a certain number of riders in to line up. If you don't get called in, you are then asked to leave the ring. Sounds harsh and is the very reason why your horse needs to be working well from the minute they step into the ring. My last work out was to trot a circle, canter a circle, change rein and then repeat. . and the difficulty of the class. Horse Shows do not offer cash purses as large as those the Thoroughbred. Show hack; Show hunter; Show hunter (British) Sidesaddle. Classes for Hacks: Small Hack - Mare or gelding. some Royal shows and Championships. In an open class the horse should wear a double or pelham bridle. This is a discussion on Show hack? within the Horse Shows forums, part of the Showing Horses category. Show hack is just another flat class for hunters. Halt in the centre and then return to the judge. It depends on the judge as to how fussy they are about what they ask of you. In this time your horse is judged on, movement, conformation, temperament, obedience and education. Like picking up the right lead, entering canter when asked, transitioning down when asked, halting when asked and generally being well behaved. Presentation also always counts and you find people painting white socks, putting in false tails, dying horses hair and painting their faces with make up. Plaits need to be neat and even, the riding equipment needs to be a good quality and very clean and the riders attire needs to also be good quality and extremely clean. Even though it is supposed to be judged solely on the horse, all these other things matter to add the wow factor. One girl I was talking to was saying that the judge could not split her and another horse, so in the end she won because her gloves matched her outfit.. LOL But basically it is judged on the horse, so you just need to make sure your working well as a team and can perform some basic movements asked by the judge. It also helps if your horse will stand quietly in the line up while the other horses are performing their work out. The judge will notice if your horse is misbehaving. If this happens try to keep your horse on the end of the line to keep out of the way. If your showing good luck, hopefully where you are is similar to here ; -).
